Antique French Cello by J.T.L. (Jerome Thibouville-Lamy), Carlo Bergonzi Model.
This exquisite antique cello, hand crafted in Mirecourt France by the renowned J.T.L. workshop and modeled after the celebrated Cremonese master Carlo Bergonzi, represents a rare opportunity for the discerning player or collector. Dating from the golden era of French lutherie, this instrument captures the elegant lines and powerful proportions of Bergonzi’s finest work, delivering both visual beauty and rich tonal depth.
Presented in excellent condition, the cello remains free of cracks or woodworm (borer) damage. It retains its stunning original varnish, beautifully preserved with a warm, golden hue that highlights the handsome flamed maple back and sides. The top displays fine, straight-grained spruce typical of high-grade French instruments of the period.
Recently fully serviced and professionally set up at The String Workshop by Phil Whitehead, the cello is now in optimal playing condition. It is fitted with a new set of premium Larsen Soloist strings, renowned for their clarity, power, and responsive tone, paired with a new Wittner tailpiece for enhanced tuning stability and refined aesthetics.
Ready for immediate performance, this cello offers a vibrant, projecting voice with excellent balance across all registers — ideal for both solo and orchestral work. A magnificent instrument that combines historical charm with modern playability.
